When a Lock Change Makes Sense

A lock change replaces the hardware itself, not just the pins. It's the right call when a lock is worn, rusted, damaged by a break-in attempt, or simply cheap. Builder-grade locks are often light-duty models, and upgrading the hardware on your exterior doors is one of the most cost-effective security improvements you can make. If your hardware is in good shape and you only need the old keys to stop working, rekeying costs less.

What Makes a Lock Installation Secure

A strong deadbolt is only as good as the door and frame around it. Most forced entries succeed by splitting the door frame at the strike plate, not by defeating the lock. When we install a deadbolt, we check that the bolt fully extends, that the door is aligned, and that the strike plate is fastened with long screws that reach the wall stud behind the frame. Those details cost little and make a real difference.

Lock Repair

Keys that stick, deadbolts that only turn when you push or pull on the door, and handles that droop are usually fixable. Common causes include a door that has shifted out of alignment, a worn cylinder, or a loose mechanism. We diagnose the problem and repair it when that makes sense, or recommend replacement when a repair would cost more than it's worth.

Lock Grades, Simply Explained

Door locks are commonly rated by ANSI/BHMA grade. Grade 1 is the heaviest duty, Grade 2 is solid residential quality, and Grade 3 is the lightest. For exterior doors we generally recommend Grade 2 or better, with Grade 1 deadbolts on the doors that matter most.
