Key Fob Not Working? Common Causes and What to Do
A key fob that suddenly stops working is frustrating, but the cause is often simple. Here's what to check before you replace it.
Start With the Fob Battery
A weak battery is the most common reason a fob stops working. The usual signs are shrinking range, buttons that need several presses, or a low key battery warning on the dash. Most fobs use a coin cell battery, the battery type is printed on the old one, and your owner's manual shows how to open the case.
Use the Backup Key or Start Method
Most fobs hide a mechanical key inside for the driver's door. Many push-to-start vehicles also have a backup way to start with a weak fob, such as holding the fob against the start button or placing it in a designated spot. Check your owner's manual for your vehicle's method.
Check the Car Battery
If the fob works but the car won't respond, or several electronics are acting up at once, the vehicle's own battery may be the problem rather than the fob.
Look for Physical Damage
Fobs that went through the washing machine, were dropped hard, or have cracked cases or worn-out buttons often fail inside and need to be replaced.
Lost Programming
Occasionally a fob loses its connection to the car, for example after battery replacement on certain models or after other key programming. Reprogramming usually requires equipment connected to the vehicle.
