New Home Security Checklist: 9 Things to Do After You Move In
Closing day is exciting, but you have no idea how many keys to your new home are still out there. This checklist covers the lock and door basics every new homeowner should handle in the first week.
1. Rekey Every Exterior Lock
Builders, previous owners, real estate agents, contractors, and neighbors may all have had keys. Rekeying makes every one of them useless without replacing your hardware. It matters even more in growing communities like Calera, Chelsea, and Alabaster, where so many homes are new construction.
2. Key the House Alike
While the locks are being rekeyed, ask about making one key work on every exterior door. It's usually possible when the locks share a keyway.
3. Check Every Deadbolt
Each exterior door should have a deadbolt that extends fully into the frame and turns smoothly. If you have to push or pull the door to lock it, the door or the strike needs adjusting.
4. Reinforce the Strike Plates
Replace short strike plate screws with long ones that reach the wall stud. It's a small upgrade that helps a door resist being kicked in.
5. Reset the Garage Door Opener and Keypad
Clear old remotes from the opener's memory and change the outside keypad code. The door from the garage into the house deserves a good deadbolt too.
6. Reset Smart Locks and Change Codes
If the home came with a smart lock, reset it to factory settings, remove the previous owner's account, and set new codes. Then rekey its backup key cylinder.
7. Secure Sliding Doors and Windows
Sliding patio doors can sometimes be lifted or forced. A security bar or pin lock adds protection, and every window lock should close fully.
8. Keep Track of Your Keys
Know who has copies. Give spares only to people you trust, and skip the fake rock by the front door.
9. Save a Local Locksmith's Number
