Rekey vs. Replace Locks: Which Is Right for You?
When keys go missing or you move into a new home, there are two ways to make the old keys useless: rekey the locks you have, or replace them. Here's how to decide.
The Short Answer
Rekey if your locks work well and you're happy with how they look. Replace them if they're worn, damaged, or low quality, or if you want an upgrade like a smart lock or a higher-grade deadbolt.
What Rekeying Does
Rekeying swaps the small pins inside the lock cylinder so it matches a new key. The lock body, handle, and finish stay the same. Old keys stop working, and you get new keys cut to match. Because you're only paying for pins and labor, rekeying usually costs much less than new hardware, especially across several doors.
What Replacing Does
Replacing means removing the lock and installing a new one. You get new keys, but also new hardware: a different look, a higher security grade, keyless entry, or a lock that works smoothly again. It costs more per door, but it's the right investment when the existing hardware is part of the problem.
When Rekeying Is the Better Choice
- You just moved in and the locks are in good shape.
- A roommate, tenant, or employee left with a key.
- Keys were lost or stolen.
- You want one key for every door, and your locks share a keyway.
- You want the most security for the least money.
When Replacing Is the Better Choice
- Locks are worn, sticky, or hard to turn.
- A break-in attempt damaged the lock or the door.
- Your exterior doors have light-duty builder-grade hardware.
- You want a smart lock or keypad deadbolt.
- You're changing the style of your doors or hardware.
Don't Forget the Door Frame
Whichever you choose, the strike plate matters. Most forced entries break the door frame, not the lock. Securing the strike plate with long screws that reach the wall stud is an inexpensive upgrade that makes any deadbolt stronger.
