Common Ignition Problems

• The key won't turn, or only turns after jiggling
• The key is stuck in the ignition and won't come out
• The key turns without engaging anything
• The ignition feels loose or gritty
• The key is badly worn, bent, or cracked

Try This First

If the key won't turn, gently turn the steering wheel left and right while turning the key. A locked steering column is the most common cause and doesn't need a locksmith at all. Also make sure an automatic transmission is fully in Park. If neither helps, don't force it, because a key broken off in the ignition turns a simple repair into a bigger one.

Repair or Replace

Keys and ignition cylinders wear together until they stop lining up. Sometimes a new key cut to factory specifications solves the problem. Other times the cylinder needs to be repaired or replaced, and when possible for your vehicle, we key the new cylinder to match your existing key so you aren't stuck carrying two.

Ignition Issues on Newer Vehicles

Many newer vehicles use push-button start, where the problem is often the key fob or immobilizer rather than a mechanical cylinder. We can diagnose key and immobilizer issues and program a new smart key when that's the fix. If the problem turns out to be electrical or mechanical rather than lock and key related, we'll tell you so you can take it to a mechanic.
