What Is a Transponder Key?

A transponder key has a small chip inside the head of the key. When you turn the ignition, the car's immobilizer sends a signal to the chip, and the engine only runs if the chip answers with the right code. Chip keys became common in the late 1990s, and today nearly every vehicle on the road uses a chip key, a remote-head key, or a smart key built on the same idea. A key that's cut perfectly but not programmed may unlock the doors, but the engine won't start or won't stay running.
